Set for Portugal
On 5-12 March Portugal will host a traditional international women’s football tournament “Algarve Cup”.

Twelve teams including Russia will take part in these very prestigious competitions which have been regularly staged since 1994.
The Russian side have participated in the Portuguese tournament only once before. It was in 1996 when 8 national women’s teams took part in the competition. Russia having been in the same group with the future winner Norway as well as China and Portugal took the third place in the group. In the match for the fifth place our team played against Iceland and beat them on penalties.
This time Russia will play against Northern Korea, Austria and Portugal at the group stage. Being in Group C Russia can count only at the fifth place maximum. But we will have to win the group first in order to fight for it.
It shall be noted that the long-term leader of FIFA Ranking, many times World Champions and the Olympic Games winners – the team of the USA have won the tournament for 9 times. Norway have 4 wins in their records and Sweden have 3.
The Russian Women’s team. Players’ list:
Goalkeepers: Elvira Todua («Rossiyanka»), Maria Zhamanakova («Zorkiy»), Alena Belyava («Mordovochka»).
Defenders: Ksenia Tsybutovich («Ryazan-VDV»), Ekaterina Dmitrenko («Rossiyanka»), Marina Pushkareva («Kubanochka»), Valentina Orlova («Zvezda-2005), Elena Medved («Zorkiy»).
Midfielders: Elena Terekhova («Ryazan-VDV»), Svetlana Tsidikova, Elena Morozova, Ekaterina Sochneva (all - «Zorkiy»), Ekaterina Lazareva (free agent), Anastasia Shevchenko («Pennsylvania University» USA), Olga Petrova («Wolfsburg» Germany), Alla Sidorovskaya («Izmailovo»).
Forwards: Nelly Korovkina (CSP «Izmailovo»), Ekaterina Pantyukhina («Zvezda-2005»), Elena Danilova («Ryazan-VDV»).

- «Algarve Cup» is one of the most prestigious tournaments for national women’s teams: it is not for nothing that it is often called an unofficial World Cup. The best teams in the world take part in this competition. Unfortunately, we are not among the best eight teams yet and will play in the third group fighting for the fifth place. But the very invitation to this tournament is very valuable – we haven’t been there since 1996! But after the summer UEFA Women’s EURO we draw attention. We are pleased to take part in the tournament and will do our best to show good performance. We have strong opponents in the group. At the last moment Northern Korea, which are the 10th in the FIFA Ranking, entered our group instead of Northern Ireland. We will start versus them. Next match will be against Austria: we know them well after the play-offs for the UEFA Women’s EURO 2013 which we won with great efforts. The third match will be against hosts – Portugal. In general, it will be very interesting!
